Critical Care – Pediatrics and Adult

Inadequate provision of nutrition in ICU patients is associated with increased overall complications, prolonged length of stay, and increased mortality. 1-7 These toolkits will address the risk of suboptimal protein delivery in the intensive care unit (ICU) patient.

Surgery

Surgery complications are costly and increase readmission risk. 8,9 Postoperative complication is the most significant independent risk factor leading to hospital readmissions 9 and directly correlates with increased costs of care. Pre- and post-operative immunonutrition has been demonstrated to decrease the risk of infectious complications.10 This toolkit focuses on optimizing patient compliance for pre-surgical immunonutrition supplement usage.

Malnutrition

Malnutrition is a largely under-recognized health problem with far reaching consequences. Greater than one-third of patients are malnourished prior to being admitted to the hospital .11 For example, the average cost of care for a single episode requiring a hospital stay can increase by nearly 60% for malnourished patients as compared to those who are well-nourished.12 QI projects that help minimize the risk for malnutrition should become a top priority. This toolkit provides the opportunity to enhance compliance to oral supplementation, an important source of nutrition support.
